Welcome to the Cosmos

    Flyspur hurried across the room to fetch a blanket.  When he turned back around he took in a tiny gasp.  He couldn’t help but wring his lower hands in concern as the Captain bent down and scooped the minute-old infant into his arms.  “Rover.  Rover, what are you doing?  It’s just hatched and Dr. Cloud says it’s extremely delicate.  It’s the only one in the Universe and means the lives of billions of people.” Rover loved children but he wasn’t always as gentle as he should be.  Flyspur suddenly had visions of Rover playfully tossing their most precious cargo in the air and missing it on the return.  With the peace child gone war would break out, planets would be destroyed and the Nellie-Bell would become the most wanted ship in the quadrant.  The future of a vast area of space and their own future existence was now held in the arms of the guy who could scarcely eat his own breakfast without dropping it. 

    Rover fixed his first mate with a look that was an equal mixture of hurt and annoyance.  “Simmer down, Blue.  Just what do you think I’m gonna do?”

    Flyspur looked down guiltily.  “Just…just be careful.”

    Rover turned his attention back to the baby, nuzzling it in the tummy.  The tiny creature made a soft trilling sound reached it’s long toes up to touch his face.  “Hey there.”  Rover whispered.  “Welcome to the Cosmos, little fellah.” 

    Flyspur smiled.
