Utopian Portrait

This story and picture takes place about fourteen years before 'Utopia Limited', around 1879. An English ship lays anchor in Utopia's little bay and with it comes a photographer. Paramount welcomes the strangers with open arms. Although neither of them completely understand one another's language the photographer manages to pose the royal family and get them to sit still long enough to take this portrait. At first it's all very confusing to them as the strange man is unable to explain why he wants them to sit in front of the odd looking box. But the next day when he shows them this slip of paper Paramount is shocked and amazed. It's one of Paramount's first encounters with England and is the first thing that makes him want to learn more. For any country that can create something so amazing must be wonderful.

The king cherishes this picture more than anything. Not only because it is a technology that boggles his mind but it has a special place in his heart. For scarcely a year later Lykella dies during childbirth and this photo is all he has left of her.

Another Gilbert and Sullivan related piece. I just can't get over how wonderful their stories are.
