Just Dandy by chill13 Just Dandy by chill13
Rover deals with pain, injury and illness in basically the same way.  He starts out hoping that if he ignores it long enough it will just go away and if that clearly won't work he will actively hide it.  There are probably several reasons for this.  For one he is just plain stubborn and doesn't like anyone to see him as weak, it deminishes his image as the big, brave adventurer.  He also hates to sit still and if he acknowledges that there is something wrong with him chances are someone's going to start telling him what to do and that will usually be to lie down and take it easy.  And last but certainly not least he has an unhealthy dread of doctors.  He would never admit that, of course.  He always excuses the fact that he will never set foot in a medical facility by saying that he has 'better things to do'.  Dr. Cloud is the only doctor he feels even marginally at ease around but will litterally hide from him when it's time for a checkup.

If one can actually get him to BE a patient he is probably the worst one a doctor could have.
Another picture that doesn't really go in any particular story.......I've just been doodling a lot lately.

Maybe he ate something that didn't agree with his stomach.
I gotta say I really love your art and the characters.

Possible. He'll eat just about anything and sometimes the things he downs aren't compatable with human chemestry.

Thanks so much! I'm glad you're enjoying them.

If Flyspurr weren't Flyspurr, he'd probably kill him once he's figured out what's up.

Yep.  Once Flyspur actually realizes that he's hurt Rover WILL get quite an earful.

Indeed. Wonder if his race has anything that remotely equates to human swear words? Because if they do, Rover's probably hearing them all.

They don't, actually.  The Jssfloon culture prides itself on politeness.  But Flyspur can certainly dole out an intense lecture that doesn't NEED any swearing.  The quick tail flicking, dark soul spots and tone of voice are plenty to let anyone know that he's upset.

Ah; that would be fascinating to watch I think. My mom would approve of their lack of swearing; she gets very upset when my dad or my brother swear.

I'm okay with it when it's only under extremely circumstances. When I write, I tend to have a hierarchy among characters about how badly "pear-shaped" (expression borrowed from the British; means things have gone badly wrong). None of my heroic/likable characters curse normally but when things are going wrong and/or they're particularly angry, they do though the oaths are usually mild. Usually the characters will lampshade the swearing in a way similar to as in below.
Character A: *swears*
Character B: (thinking) Uh-oh. A's cursing; not sure I want to know what's gone wrong.
Or like this. The characters in question are fraternal twins and the male has managed to put their younger brother in danger; they were born in and spent their formative years in England.
Girl: (smacks her brother across the face) YOU COMPLETE ARSE! DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT YOU'VE DONE?
Her sister-in-law (younger brother's wife): Girl...you just swore...you never swear...
Girl: I swear; just not often and besides your husband swears less than me.
Her brother: But she IS right; you swear so infrequently. Why now?
Girl: Because you're being a complete twit; do you even know what you've done?
I'll leave off here because I haven't worked exactly what proceeds and follows this conversation.
What do you think?

In my opinion there is ALWAYS a way around swearing.  I mean, look at Disney.  They have bums, gangsters, really really evil villians, streetwise characters, smartmouthed characters (character types that probably would swear in real life, but in the movie you're never like "oh, they should totally swear".  Because it's not needed to get the point across.  Even very very angry chararacters don't have to swear to get angry across.)  There's always other words or phrases that can convey a similar meaning but not offend anyone.

Like instead of using the 'A' word you could use 'moron', 'idiot', 'mush-for-brains'.  Which actually makes more sense than calling someone a couple of pads of fat on the top of your legs.

Of course, it's your writing.  This is just my opinion.

Oh dear, that's not good. :/ Rover, don't be daft and see Dr. Cloud! It's only gonna get worse otherwise. Though I do understand his fear, with being seriously injured as a kid and all... Spending such a long time in hospital must've seriously traumatized him. But still... ouch. Poor guy. See Dr. Cloud. Like, right now.

No, not good at all.

Rover:  *tries desperately to look more annoyed than hurt*  It's nothin'!  I ain't callin no doctor.  I got better things to do than sit on that blame table and be poked on prodded.

That is exactly where his aversion comes from.  The Jssfloon doctors were very kind to him, but they didn't understand human chemestry and they were afraid to use too much anesthetic on him.  So some of the things they did to try to help really hurt.

Geez, the poor guy :( After an ordeal like that, I think anyone would be mortified. Especially after going through it as a child.

You never know what will come out of his mouth :)

He knew they were trying to help and he never had any hard feelings toward them but it didn't stop him from developing a severe aversion to all things medical.  He's not self-aware enough to really make the connection though.  All he knows is that he wants nothing to do with doctors.  It took a lot of begging and persuasion for him to even let Dr. Cloud become part of his crew.

You just come up with the best things :D

And I don't really blame him. It's good that he doesn't hold a grudge though and that he knows that they were just trying to help. Another person might have reacted a lot differently and would have become an extremely angry individual.

Ah, so his dislike of doctors is more of a subconscious thing for him?

No, he doesn't have any hard feelings. But you're right, many people in that situation would have ended up with a lot more issues than he has.

It's almost entirely subconscious.  It's never "I don't want to be around you because your a doctor and I don't like doctors because..." , it's more like "Dude!  I'm not sure why but I REALLY want to be somewhere else right now."

Most of them just think he's stubborn. Nana can smell emotions so she knows how nervous and uncomfortable he gets but she doesn't have a clue why. Flyspur doesn't know for sure as it's not something Rover ever talks about but he suspects.

Oyyy veyyy…That's just how I would react when I'm on a boat for over 45 minutes o~o I don't do well on boats…but in Rover's case, this looks more like pain than sickness. Looks like he fell on his side pretty hard, at least that's how I see it. Aww, poor guy :/

But sure, who isn't afraid of doctors? I'm terrified of hospitals and needles and all those scary tools o.o But Rover shouldn't have to feel degraded about admitting his injury or illness. If he keeps covering it up, the pain's not gonna leave.

I've never had trouble with sea sickness but I've heard about it plenty and it doesn't sound fun.  But, yes, Rover is certainly having a lot more trouble than being a bit nausious.  A bad fall would explain the pain he's in now.  He's really not doing very well.

Rover is far too proud for his own good.  His heroes are all those macho cowboy's, remember.  But, yes hiding something serious isn't a smart idea at all.  I think his fear of doctors stems from being stuck in a Jssfloon hospital for so long after he was given his arm.  And in school he was given a Jssfloon vaccine like all the rest of the kids in his class but it didn't sit well with his human chemical makeup and made him seriously sick.

Really? Well, you're blessed o.o In retrospect, it feels like someone's kneading the inside of your stomach and your head's full of water :I Yeah. At first, I thought it was nausea, but he would've been gripping his stomach, not his side Cx

Yes, he certainly is. Ahhh right right right. He looks up to them, and he doesn't want to be anywhere below weak or hurt, 'cause he sees his 'heroes' as undeniable beings. Awwww :C He must be petrified of doctors now. Like a cat trying to avoid getting his claws clipped.

eeehh.  Yes, I'm quite glad I don't deal with that.

And, of course, those old cheezy westerns an no where close to realistic when it comes to how much injury a guy can sustain and still be standing.  And Rover feels that he's got to be just as tough as that.  Anything less and he would be falling short of humanity.

Yeah, it's not a great feeling o~o

Ah yes, the old corny 'tumbleweed' westerns x'3 It's physically impossible for a human to withstand so many blows. It's like Batman! He doesn't have any superpowers, he's a human being, yet he still manages to survive anything. He's been stabbed, shot, and had his spine broken, but apparently, that's not enough to kill him...'cause he's Batmaaaannn...

Nana certainly can.  She has a downright uncanny sense of smell.  Flyspur probably could if he was standing close enough.  And possibly Nik, with his long feathery antennea, but he might not recognize it.

In my universe, yeah.  There are all different types and they do look and smell different.  Flyspur has been Rover's friend for a very long time so he would know exactly what it smelled like.  But his nose works better underwater than on land so he would have to be standing pretty close before he could smell it.

I bet that comes in handy.

Interesting. I bet after a few of these incidents, Flyspur will educate everyone to know how to tell when Rover's hurt.

It does. It also means that predators on other planets would find something from a strange planet just as tasty.
Speaking of food, what are your different species' diets like?

Flyspur is pretty decerning about the whole business.

Very interesting question.  Flyspur is mostly vegetarian with the occasional insect or aquatic invertibrate to spice things up.  Dr. Cloud's species are insectivores, but they can eat veggies if called upon to do so.  Nik and Kit are nectar drinkers, and that only.  They don't even have the mouth parts to chew solid food.  Nana can and will eat just about anything as will Rover.  Trigger eats metal shavings, which is why there is the occasional hole in the bulkheads.

That would make packing food for the crew a very interesting job.
Trigger must have strong jaws to manage that.
My creatures diets are a little less varied. Most of my creatures could find something to eat in a well-stocked human fridge. (Probably gross out the human when they went and ate a raw steak.) What's really ironic is my "Doc" is also into insects and small animals or fruit. They'd be able to discuss doctor stuff over a meal of grasshoppers, or whatever the local planet's equivalent is.

Oh, that's very interesting!  Insects grow pretty big on their planet, so even thought they are a fairly large species they can live on insects.  Other places, however he might have to be satisfied with other small creatures.

I'm sure he'd like that!  He is always up for a discussion with another doctor.

It certainly is not a good thing to do and it's ended up not so good for him more than once.  And it's a quality that drives Dr. Cloud nuts because even when he suspects that something might be wrong it's hard for him to be sure because that's exactly when Rover avoids him.

Very possible.  All his shuttles are second hand and they glitch on occasion....sometimes at just the wrong occasion.
