Flyspur Sketches

Description

A few sketches of Flyspur, the second in command of the trade ship Bessy.  (working on drawing him consistently)

Flyspur is Jssfloon, chill13.deviantart.com/art/Jss… A species with the ability for extensive space travel but for the most part stay near their home planet.  Flyspur is certainly an exception, reaching the edges of known space with the crew of the little cobbled-together spacecraft.

His childhood was somewhat difficult.  As all third children of the Jssfloon, Flyspur was born sterile.  In a society that is centered around child rearing and the family 'thirds' are considered rather irrelevant.  Most consider educating them an ineffective use of time and energy as they will not have any children to pass the wisdom on to.  Flyspur was fortunate enough to have a mother who paid the extra fee for him to have a complete education.  He loved the learning but considering his position he was often teased and left out leaving him quiet and a little shy.  He probably would have stayed that way if a mysterious alien hadn't showed up in class.  Rover's tuition was being paid for by an old farmer who had found the boy in a crashed escape pod in his field.  Rover has no qualms against talking to or playing with a Third like Flyspur, in fact, it seems that Flyspur was the only one who was happy to talk to him.  The two quickly became inseparable and when Rover decided take off for the stars his sidekick was ready to follow.

Truthfully, he had wanted to leave Jssfloon for some time.  As a Third it was difficult to get a real job, as employers would much rather give a position to someone who had a family to feed, or at least would have a family to feed in the future.  But that was only part of the reason he left.  Rover needed looking after.  His friend was unpredictable and impulsive and on Jssfloon had ended up in both the hospital and jail more than once.  It wasn't that he was a bad fellow.  But he did before he thought.  And perhaps he needed someone to do some of the thinking for him, at least to keep him out of trouble some of the time.

As Rover's second in command Flyspur is competent and loyal.  He will follow the captain into pretty much anything but he will speak up if he thinks something is a bad idea.

(I really need to come up with a title for this series)

That hat is almost bigger than he is! You sure have come up with quite a cast here. I love how Rover gets so passionately interested in so many things (including ones that he really has no particular cultural tie to, unless you're going with Picard's 'culture of one' thought). It's good that Rover and Flyspur each have the other to look after (and to look after them). What a team!
